Mutualistas, or mutual aid societies, sprang up in Mexican American communities in the early 20th century to protect and assist members facing economic hardships or discrimination. Health insurance, burial assistance, legal advocacy, cultural activities, and member participation are detailed in an extraordinary array of records.

About the presenter

Houston native Joy Oria has spoken nationally on Hispanic genealogical research and completed the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy course Advanced Hispanic Research in 2020. She helped customers discover their family history at the Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research in Houston, Texas from 2015 to 2022. Her earlier career experiences include zookeeper and park ranger. She is currently studying for a master’s degree in Library Science with the University of North Texas.
