It's such a misconception that it has been rumoured since near conception, however Clement Moore did not write "A Night Before Christmas". The real author was most likely Henry Livingston Jr. The descendants of Henry Livingston have claimed this from the beginning.
Don Foster, professor at Vassar, has published evidence to support the authorship by Henry Livingston. "Author Unknown: On the Trail of Anonymous" (New York: Henry Holt, 2000): 221-75.
