Isn't it possible to automatically sort children into birth order? Don't know why it wouldn't be beneficial in all cases. It's the most frequent "problem" I seem to have.

Automatically sorting the children into birth order may not always be desirable. When I'm entering details on families that include strays and/or foster-children, I always list those lower in the heirarchy than I do the natural children. For myself that's my preference. If the software automatically sorted the children into birth order, my optional preference of listing strays after birth children would no longer be available to me.
