This past year has been one of the most successful ever for our company (seems like I write that every year...) - all thanks go to the genealogy community and especially our great Legacy Family Tree users - you! Our company (Millennia Corporation) celebrated our 29th year in business, and the 16th year since we first released Legacy.

Once again this has been the year of the genealogy webinar. We have led the way of bringing quality genealogy education to the entire world. Our efforts were recognized in April as our Legacy Family Tree Webinar Series at www.FamilyTreeWebinars.com was awarded the "Best Genealogy Education or Learning Experience" as part of About.com's 2013 Genealogy Readers' Choice Awards.

In March we launched the availability of annual and monthly webinar memberships, providing members with unlimited access to the 136 hours of recordings. By the end of 2013, the archives has grown to include 208 hours of genealogy education presented by 41 of the industry's finest educators. It also now includes nearly 550 pages of instructors' supplemental syllabus materials. All for less than $5/month (for an annual membership).

June was a bitter sweet month as FamilySearch announced that their flagship software, Personal Ancestral File (PAF) was to be discontinued. PAF was with me in my earliest years of genealogy research. I reminisced about it here.

We began revealing the forthcoming Legacy Family Tree 8 in June with a series of articles which seemed to energize the entire genealogy community.

My newest book, Legacy Family Tree - Unlocked! was released in July and based on the brand new Legacy 8. Its "Watch Geoff Live" approach of teaching genealogy and Legacy through real life genealogy experiences has made the book the most popular education product we have ever sold. In fact, one of the most well-known and experienced book publishers in the genealogy industry said that my Digital Imaging Essentials book was the fastest-selling genealogy book he has ever sold. Legacy Family Tree - Unlocked! has far surpassed it. So thanks to everyone for reading it! I hope it continues to inspire your own genealogy research efforts.

In September nearly 300 of you joined us on our 10th annual Legacy Genealogy Cruise. In addition to the 25+ hours of genealogy and Legacy classes, we visited the sites in San Diego, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Puerto Quetzal, Costa Rica, the Panama Canal, Panama, and Columbia. Next year our 11th annual Legacy Genealogy Cruise will depart from Tokyo (Yokohama), Japan and see the sites of Japan, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore.

Upon our return, I played with new technology - Windows 8.1 (which I am beginning to really enjoy now after a slow warming up to it) and my green screen. It was a blast to broadcast Webinar Wednesday virtually from my family's church in Denmark through the use of the green screen. It worked so well that I had dozens of emails from viewers who commented how great it was for me to be able to visit the country of my ancestors. Check out the pictures here.

It goes without saying, but the highlight of 2013 was the release of our long-awaited Legacy 8. We introduced many industry firsts including the origins and migration reports, source labels, citations on pedigree charts, and much more. Never before have so many of you chosen to use Legacy Family Tree and we thank you all so much for your support! We hope you continue to love Legacy!

Finally, we announced the upcoming 2014 webinar schedule where once again, we will bring you 52 of the highest quality genealogy classes available. I've loved your emails where you've written that you now reschedule your doctor's appointments to be with us during the live shows on Webinar Wednesdays! We will also launch our first-ever virtual Legacy User Group meetings in 2014. About the presenter

Geoffrey D. Rasmussen is the father of four budding genealogists. He graduated with a degree in Genealogy and Family History from Brigham Young University and has served as director and vice-president of the Utah Genealogical Association. He is a dynamic genealogy speaker on all forms of genealogy technology, and as host of the Legacy Family Tree webinar series, has spoken virtually to nearly 100 different countries. He has authored books, videos, articles, and websites, and develops the Legacy Family Tree software program. On a personal note, Geoff enjoys playing the piano, organ, cello, basketball and bowling. His favorite places are cemeteries, the ocean, and hanging out with other genealogists. He met and proposed to his wife in a Family History Center.

Notable collection updates include the 834,729 indexed records and images from the U.S., Maryland, Baltimore Passenger Lists, 1820–1948, collection, the 590,658 indexed records from the new U.S., New York, State Health Department, Genealogical Research Death Index, 1957–1963, collection, and the 12,338 indexed records and images from the new Hungary, Jewish Vital Records Index, 1800–1945, collection. Legacy can create a birthday calendar, an anniversary calendar, or a combination of the two. There are options to include a cover picture, picture pages above each calendar month, and complete control over color, layout, shadows, fonts, page size, and more. The calendars can be blank or include the birthdates and anniversaries of the people already entered in your family file.

That's right! Because the information (birthdays and anniversaries) is already in your Legacy family file, Legacy will automatically add this to the calendar pages. With the who to include options, you can customize the calendar so only certain family lines are included. You even have the option to skip the anniversaries of divorced couples.

Get Started

To begin, make sure that you have installed Legacy Family Tree 8 Deluxe Edition available here. Then follow these steps:

1. With Legacy open, click on the Reports tab, then the Other Reports button, then the Calendar Creator.
2. Using the options on the six tabs, customize the calendar to your preferences.
3. Print, and enjoy being the person in your family that never misses a birthday or anniversary!

Instead of including all 20,000+ individuals on my calendar, I selected to include "Only Tagged Living Individuals" (found on the Include tab). I previously "tagged" the descendants of my grandparents and my wife's parents so as to only include those closely related to me.

How to Update

For our Deluxe Edition users, all you have to do is connect to the Internet, start Legacy 8, and click on the "Install and Download Now" link on the Legacy Home tab. (If you're reading this from within the Legacy Home tab inside of Legacy 8, you'll first need to click on the Home button in the top left of the Legacy Home tab which looks like the following picture:

If you are a Standard Edition Legacy user, you will need to visit our website. Go to http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp and follow the instructions.

You've heard of the Genealogy Happy Dance, and hopefully you've experienced one or two recently. This weekend while researching at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, I discovered a new dance - the Legacy 8 Happy Dance! Let me explain....

I've been researching William Henry BROWN's family. I even did a Watch Geoff Live webinar about adding his death certificate to Legacy. In many of his records I've located him as W. H. Brown with his wife Lillian. This weekend I located another record of W. H. Brown, but this time with a different wife, Stella.

My first assumption was that William remarried, but then I located another document which listed the names as Wilbert Henry Brown and Stella. So, it's probable that I have two different W. H. Browns living in the same area at the same time. A third document proved this when Wilbert and Stella were the witnesses to William and Lillian's marriage. Are you following all of this? :)

To make it easier for me to keep track of the newly-found Wilbert Henry Brown, I opened Legacy 8 and began to add him to his own tree (not linked to anyone in my current tree) by clicking on the Add tab, and then clicking on Add Male.

I next added Wilbert's name:

After clicking Save, this screen appeared:

Unbeknowst to me at the time, I already had a Wilbert H. Brown in my family file! He wasn't married to a Stella, but his Research Notes indicated that he was probably married twice. Looking closer at his Chronology View, he was living in the same area as the other William and Wilbert that I was researching.

This is where the Legacy 8 Happy Dance came in! I would not have easily made the connection about the newly-found Wilbert Henry Brown possibly already being in my family file without Legacy 8's brand new Possible Duplicate feature! About the presenter

Karen Clifford develops and teaches multiple online genealogy courses at colleges in California and Utah.  She is an Accredited Genealogist® Professional and a Fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association. She has been President/CEO of Genealogy Research Associates, Incorporated since 1997. Her years of professional research work lead to authoring college textbooks and do-it-yourself guidebooks covering both traditional and electronic genealogy research including several books: Becoming an Accredited Genealogist, The Complete Beginners Guide to Genealogy, the Internet, and Your Genealogy Computer Program (updated 2011), and Digging Deeper: Using Essential Pre-1850 Records (2011). She was the founding President of the Monterey County Genealogy Society, a Director of the Monterey California Family History Center, President of the Utah Genealogical Association, a Vice President of the Federation of Genealogical Societies, and a Vice Chair of the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogist (ICAPGen) where she continues to oversee Test Development and Test Quality Control.
