What a weekend I had! In addition to speaking at the Utah Genealogical Association conference, I got to do it with my 8-year-old son, Braden. This was his first genealogy conference, and he was a great helper at our Legacy Family Tree booth. He handed our brochures and stamped prize cards. He even attended one of my classes. Initially I couldn't figure out why he didn't want to attend my last three classes, but then I learned that he found that he could play the Angry Birds game at our booth when everyone else was in class. He learned some of the lingo - like pedigrees, descendancies, and ancestors. He thought it was funny to call me his ancestor. When I asked him what his favorite part was, he replied with "I got to miss a day of school."

Some of my fondest memories are of teaching genealogy to my children. Here is Evan finding his first death certificate on a microfilm reader at the Family History Library. He looked at it, looked at me, looked at it again, and looked at me again. Then he said, "Dad, I thought genealogy was boring. This is so...much...fun!" Priceless.

One of my kids' favorite outings is to head to the cemetery with the BillionGraves app in hand. Even my 5-year-old daughter enjoys pushing the green button on the camera (takes a picture of the headstone and publishes it to the BillionGraves website to be indexed).

We tried to start Kaitlyn young. This is my wife, Tanya, doing a little FamilySearch Indexing while in labor with our daughter.

While it is usually me who says "let's go find an ancestor" every once in a while one of them will initiate the experience. They seem to feel something as they seek for their relatives.

  • Make full use of the chronology view. It is an invaluable tool for helping with research.
  • Use the source clipboard more efficiently now you have seen it in action. (And save time too).
  • Add images to facts/events as well as to their sources. (I had only attached to the source but now see the advantage of adding twice).
  • When an event/fact has been recorded, immediately set up a to-do item to follow up new or unanswered research questions. (I always ask myself three questions when I start data entry for any document 1. What does this tell me? 2. What does this not tell me? 3. Where can I find more information? Plus, of course, is this a primary or secondary source?)
  • Add a source to the parent's name(s), using the parent button on the individual information box.
  • Make full use of useful tools like the soundex feature, date calculator etc.
  • Use the county date checker for historical accuracy.
  • Think about when I would use shared events.
  • Finally - buy Legacy V8 when it becomes available - after all it is the best genealogy software.
  • I loved the ending of the book when you described the visit to the cemetery. Visiting ancestral graves, old family homes, churches ancestors were married in etc is a favourite part of my research. - Anne

She is an Accredited Genealogist® Professional and a Fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association. She has been President/CEO of Genealogy Research Associates, Incorporated since 1997. Her years of professional research work lead to authoring college textbooks and do-it-yourself guidebooks covering both traditional and electronic genealogy research including several books: Becoming an Accredited Genealogist, The Complete Beginners Guide to Genealogy, the Internet, and Your Genealogy Computer Program (updated 2011), and Digging Deeper: Using Essential Pre-1850 Records (2011). She was the founding President of the Monterey County Genealogy Society, a Director of the Monterey California Family History Center, President of the Utah Genealogical Association, a Vice President of the Federation of Genealogical Societies, and a Vice Chair of the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogist (ICAPGen) where she continues to oversee Test Development and Test Quality Control.
