Legacy has many different views that you can work off of and which one you choose is personal preference. Each view is customizable so that you can tweak it to your liking. How to customize the different views will be covered at a later time.

The Family View - To me the Family View feels like a Family Group Sheet.  You can see the husband and wife along with their parents and their children. You can navigate through the generations by clicking a name that you want to put into the main view. To edit someone, double click their name.

The Pedigree View - Some people prefer to work off of a view that looks like a Pedigree Chart. To put someone into the anchor position, double click their name. To edit someone, right click on the person and select Edit.

The Descendant View - This view is set up like a Descendant Chart with generation numbers (based on the anchor person) to the left. You can customize the columns to show the information you want to see on each person.

The Chronology View - This is a comprehensive timeline of your ancestor of interest. You can add in historical timelines so that you know what events were going on that might have affected his life. Again, this view is very customizable.

The Index View - This view shows everyone in your file.  You can sort the list by RIN (or User ID), Given Name or Surname by using the buttons at the top. Like the Descendant View you can customize the columns to show the information you want to see. To edit someone, double click their name.

The Name List - To see the Name List go to VIEW > NAME LIST. This is a great view to use if you are editing a lot of people.  If you create a Search List, it will look exactly like the Name List and it works in the very same way. Like the Index View, you can sort this list by RIN (or User ID), Given Name or Surname by using the buttons at the top. Over on the right you will see six tabs where you can do all of your editing.

The Marriage List - To see the Marriage List go to VIEW > MARRIAGE LIST. If you are working off of the Marriage you can edit each person or their marriage by using the buttons at the bottom of the screen. You can sort this list by MRIN, the Husband, or the Wife using the buttons at the top. If you are using Gender-Neutral Terms this will be Left Spouse and Right Spouse.

Legacy has different views so that our users can find one that makes the most sense to them. These views are used to see your data and to navigate., however, with the exception of the Name List all data entry is done on the Individual's Information screen.

Legacy 9 was released in April and included many industry firsts such as Hashtags, FindAGrave.com searching, X-DNA charts and more. Thanks to Legacy's new Hinting tool, our users are smashing through brick walls like never before. My personal "fave" new feature was the Family Tree BINGO report which was a hit at our family reunion this summer. We are now working to provide an optional two-way sync between Legacy and MyHeritage, finishing up the Mac version, plus lots of other exciting new features.

Our webinar series at www.FamilyTreeWebinars.com, now seven years strong, continues to bring the finest genealogy education to the masses. We added 194 new webinars to the library in 2017 which now boasts 639 classes taught by 159 of genealogy's finest educators. We just announced our 2018 lineup where we will once again host the monthly webinar series for the Board for Certification of Genealogists as well as hosting the brand new MyHeritage webinar series. You won't need every single class, but when you do need a little help, our webinars are there for you. We also plan to add closed-captioning to many of our webinar recordings in 2018.

Obviously, the biggest news of the year came in August when we announced our company's acquisition by MyHeritage. It rocked the genealogy news feeds and caused some uncertainty at first, but MyHeritage has done as they have promised - everything will stay the same except that it will just get better. I've got to admit, the more I work with, utilize, and learn about MyHeritage, the more and more happy I am to be working for the fastest growing company in the industry. The company now has 420 employees, 92 million users, and 8.3 billion historical records and are adding more value every month. In fact, just yesterday they, or should I say "we" just announced the release of one of the largest collection of digitized US yearbooks in existence. I can hardly wait to see if I can locate my parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents in these new records.

Perhaps the biggest area where MyHeritage is excelling is in the DNA market, where we just announced that MyHeritage DNA surpassed one million people in the DNA database, and that we are the fastest company to reach the one million mark. I loved this brief video about Irish people taking a MyHeritage DNA test:

Be sure to upload your DNA test results at https://www.myheritage.com/dna. Because of MyHeritage's large international audience, you'll likely find, like I did, a whole bunch of additional DNA matches that you won't find at the other websites.

And to be completely truthful, this 2017 year in review article pales in comparison to the Year in Review on the MyHeritage blog. This article made me proud to be a MyHeritage employee and confirms our decision to seek the partnership/acquisition that we did.

As we move into a new year, may we all have the hope, the skills, and the tools to help us find lots and lots of ancestors. And remember, "life is short, do genealogy first!"

About the presenter

Elissa Scalise Powell, CG, CGL, a western Pennsylvania researcher for over 25 years, is the co-director of the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP), and Professional Genealogy Course Coordinator at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR). She was an instructor and module creator for Boston University's Genealogical Research Certificate program 2008-2016. She was the course co-coordinator of the AG/CG Preparation Course at the 2010 and 2013 Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG). She is a regional and national speaker on such topics as Pennsylvania records, methodology, professional development, and society management.

 

She was a Trustee for the Board for Certification of Genealogists for nine years, their President (2012-2014), and past Outreach Committee Chairperson. She was a Director for the Association of Professional Genealogists for six years; taught genealogy courses at the local community college for fourteen years; co-edited a cemetery book series, appeared on the PBS-TV show Ancestors2 cemetery episode and on the Travel Channel’s Dead Files in the 2015 “The Instigator” episode. She is a past-President of two local Pittsburgh area societies and a contributing author to many publications including the NGS Quarterly and the APG Quarterly. She was honored in May 2010 with the NGS President's Citation in recognition of outstanding, continuing, or unusual contributions to the field of genealogy.

 

An NSDAR member, she is also a lifetime member of the Ohio Genealogical Society; the Medina County Chapter, OGS; and the Baltzer Meyer Historical Society (Greensburg, PA) which was named for her ancestor.

4. Calculate your time zone by clicking here.
5. Make sure you have the latest version of Java installed on your computer. Check at www.java.com.
6. Check your GoToWebinar connection here.
7. Click on the webinar link (found in confirmation and reminder emails) prior to the start of the webinar. Arrive early as the room size is limited to the first 1,000 arrivals that day.

How to Add Multiple Help Files (Intermediate)

We have many users that are bilingual and they flip Legacy back and forth between languages as needed (Options > Select Language). There is an additional feature that our bilingual users might find useful that most users don't know exists. You can add multiple Help Files to Legacy in different languages.

All you have to do is install each language version that you want. You can do this using the free Standard Edition of Legacy or Legacy Deluxe. When you install another language version over what you have, the only thing that will be installed is what is missing which is the Help File.

I normally use the English version but I also installed the German version because I am bilingual. A new icon magically appears on the Help Toolbar. If I click the new icon I will get a dialog box allowing me to chose which language I want to use. I don't have to do this each time, only when I want to switch.

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! I know that there will be people that have never switched Legacy from one language to another that will try it out after reading this article. There is one thing that you need to be aware of. If you have customized your event sentences you will lose your custom sentences when you switch. What you need to do is make a backup before you switch, do what you need to do in the other language, switch back, and then restore your backup.

There are a lot of different ways to find help while using the Legacy Family Tree software program. Below are seven easy ways for your to get started.

1) On every screen in Legacy there is a Help button. If you click the Help button it will take you to the appropriate location in the Help File for that topic so that you don't have to search for what you are looking for.

2) Legacy 9 now includes the PDF version of the User's Guide. In previous versions this was a separate purchase. In your order confirmation email there are two links, one to download the program and one to download the PDF version of the User's Guide.

3) We also have Knowledge Base articles that are searchable HERE.

4) There are lots of Legacy videos (free) to teach you how to use the program. You can find them  HERE.

5) We also have a Legacy Users Group mailing list where you can ask questions and get advice. You can join HERE. 

6) If you are on Facebook there is a Legacy Users Group there that has over 15,000 members. You can join HERE.

Both of the Legacy Users Groups are monitored by some of the staff, beta testers, and translators.

7) You can find shortcuts to many of the helps by either selecting the Help tab on the main toolbar or by selecting the Legacy Home tab and then looking over to the right under the Support heading.
