Legacy Family Tree update available (version 7.5.0.269) - FamilySearch integration & more

We have another great new Legacy Family Tree update (free) for you to download. This update adds the long-anticipated ability to synchronize and interact with FamilySearch's Family Tree. It also adds a new SourceWriter template for the recently-released 1921 Canada census.

See the download instructions below for step-by-step instructions on installing this update.

What's New

FamilySearch Family Tree Interaction. FamilySearch's Family Tree is a collaborative online tree where researcher's interact with a large, unified database of connected genealogical information. It is one of the must-visit sites to compare what you know about an ancestor with what others have shared. Legacy's FamilySearch tools provide the ability to:

  • Check and compare the FamilySearch Family Tree for possible matches with your ancestor.
  • Link your Legacy person to the Family Tree person so Legacy can monitor for any changes/updates made by other researchers. Legacy can also "Auto Match" your Legacy file.
  • Add your Legacy person to the Family Tree for others to view. Maybe you will find a new cousin or two!
  • Share information you might have about an ancestor already in the Family Tree. You can help fill in the gaps or missing information for someone else.
  • Download information that others have published. A complete citation is added to any information you download so you know exactly where it came from.
  • Know how "complete" your genealogy is. The percentage tracker can help you manage your genealogy projects so you are not so overwhelmed.
  • LDS members:
    • Reserve and print Family Ordinance Requests (FORs)
    • Organize and share ordinance cards with friends and family

To get started, turn on the FamilySearch option in Legacy by going to Options > Customize > General tab > and turn on the option to "Integrate with FamilySearch". Of course, this tool is completely optional.

Then click on the FamilySearch button in the main toolbar:

Fs1

After logging in, Legacy searches FamilySearch Family Tree for any possible matches and displays them for you to compare:

Fs2

If they appear to be the same person, click on the "This person is the same as mine" button. Then you optionally can share information back and forth:

Fs3

Looks like FamilySearch has some burial information about my Carrie May Gekeler that I didn't know about previously. I could click on the green arrow to add this to my Legacy family file, or I could just use it as a clue for me to verify. Morris Hill Cemetery is not too far from where I live, so maybe I'll go check this out this afternoon.

FamilySearch Family Tree is available to everyone - give it a try today by downloading today's Legacy update.

SourceWriter. Congratulations to Canadian researchers! The 1921 Canada census is now available to browse at Ancestry. When you find an ancestor, you will now be able to properly cite its source with the updated SourceWriter template.

Fs4

Census List tool. Because the new census has not yet been indexed, knowing 1) who was alive in 1921 and 2) where in Canada they were living is important. Our updated Census List tool now includes the ability to quickly find everyone that meet these conditions. After clicking on the Search button, click on the Census List tab:

Fs5

Happy searching!

Legacy Family Tree update available (version 7.5.0.185) - Census List Tool enhancements

We have another great new Legacy Family Tree update (free) for you to download. After the recent release of our new Census List Tool, we have had a flood of ideas from you to make the new feature even better. Today's free update adds several of your suggestions.

See the download instructions below for step-by-step instructions on installing this update.

What's New

In our last update we released the genealogy industry's first-ever Census List Tool, which will tell you who was alive on any date in any location. Watch the webinar here. Many of you have figured out that it does much more than just helping you find who was alive during a census. You can use it to help you find who was alive on any date in history.

Today's update adds some fantastic options for excluding individuals from the report or search list.

Exclude individuals from the Report who appear to have already been found in this census - With this option turned on, Legacy looks in several places to see if the current census has already been referenced for a particular person:

  • Event names and descriptions
  • individual and event source citations
  • and individual notes.

If the current census is mentioned in any of these places, you can have the person excluded from the census report. No need to fill up valuable report space with the names of those you have already found. But if you still want to include their names, you can turn on the option to italicize their names. Now it's easy to know who you have found and who you still need to find.

Census3

Exclude individuals from the Report with location percentages less than  X % - On the report, Legacy suggests where each person would be living in the census year dependent upon the location's date and how close it was to the census date. Locations with low percentages can be excluded from the census report by selecting a percentage value as the minimum acceptable.

The report also now considers the birth places of the children to help determine where the person may have been living on a certain date.

Legacy 7.5 receives FamilySearch certifications - to be released January 17, 2011

Legacy Family Tree 7.5 has now received official FamilySearch certification in four new categories and will be available as a free update for both Standard and Deluxe edition users on Monday, January 17, 2011.

For years, FamilySearch has worked on developing a web application for researchers to be able to interact with a very large, unified database of connected genealogical information. This new system is being released in phases - first for members of the LDS church while it is tested and perfected, and then to the public. This new database, commonly known as "New FamilySearch" is the database with which Legacy 7.5 will interact. All other databases, including the new Historical Records, Family Trees, and Library Catalog are currently open to everyone at www.FamilySearch.org.

Who should install this update?

Everyone. Although the only major new feature in the 7.5 update will be the addition of more new FamilySearch integration tools, there will be dozens of minor additions and fixes for everyone. However, gaining access to the new FamilySearch databases requires an account. Currently, registering for a new account is restricted to members of the LDS church.

New FamilySearch Certifications

  • Sync - ability to keep FamilySearch family tree current with Legacy's information for selected persons and information (optional - you do not have to share anything if you do not desire)
  • Update - publish to new.familysearch.org family tree. Also includes request to combine matched individuals (also optional)
  • Ordinance Reservation (LDS-specific) - identify persons needing ordinances, prepare for Ordinance Request, and check for duplicate ordinances
  • Ordinance Request (LDS-specific) - request ordinances in order to print the ordinance cards

Previous FamilySearch Certifications

  • Access - search and read new.familysearch.org family tree
  • Print - print multiple reports and charts using online data from FamilySearch
  • Ordinance Status (LDS-specific) - read and display ordinance status information
  • PAF Import - PAF data can be imported into Legacy for use in the tree

We also expect to be certified in the "Helper" category for this update.

Register for our Legacy-FamilySearch webinars

As part of the Arizona Family History Expo in January we are teaching two classes about Legacy and its new FamilySearch tools. These classes will also be broadcast to a live webinar audience. Registration is free but space is limited.
